*OTEY* - Am interested in developing information about, & ancestry of, James Strong OTEY. Noted genealogist Chris Bailey once conducted a study & developed an outstanding paper on the OTEY family of early Crawford County, which was presented incrementally in several issues of the Robinson newspaper. However, details regarding the background of James Strong OTEY, prior to his 1818 settling in Crawford County, remain steeped in mystery. After arriving in Crawford County, James in 1818 married Susannah Northcraft CULLOM, and their progeny thereafter proliferated in Crawford County. James is understood to have been born in 1791 in VA, which prompts the consideration that he might have been an extension of the well-known OTEY family of New Kent and Bedford Counties, VA. There is an admittedly tantalizing correlation with a James OTEY, Jr., who was reportedly born in 1788 New Kent & resided there, prior to later relocating before 1820 to KY, where it is understood that he remained. Other 'sightings' have occurred in Wythe County, VA, where a John M. OTEY was reported born at Max Meadows in 1798, and also in Pittsylvania County, VA, where a James (& a Thomas) STRONG was/(were) noted in a 1767 tithe list.
